Revised Final Concept and Design

New Final Design and Concept: The slideshow concept is kept. I added a personalized text message feature for participant to write their own dialogs and at the same time, agreed to make a contribution of $20. The campagin would have a statement, “I want to make a diference because…” User can response to the statment by sending their personalized text message through mobile phones.

Location – Testing

Originally my location is in the center of SoHo, Prince and West Broadway. However, my projection was not power enough to project across the street. The area was too bright. It lost the contrast and colors, barely can see anything. It was complete failure.

I also tested on several locations I originally planned for backups. The result was also a failure. Many test errors occured either area was too bright, projector not power enough or the color of the wall was too dark.

Finally, I found two locations that work perfectly for projection as well as attracting awareness for the cause.

The first location is on the corner of Thompson St and West Houston St. Black background with white text content.

The 2nd location corner of East 7th st and 1st ave. White Background with blue text content.

Wall Locations

Center of Soho – This is the best location of all in the city to convey my message. It is in the center of SOHO. The wall is perfectly located next to major billboards such as DKNY, PEPSI, Calvin Klein, ALDO, PSP SONY and Armani Exchange. The visuals convey a message related to the surroundings of commercial ads or stores that people buys unnecessary materials they might not really need. Instead they could make a difference to the undeveloped countries by making a donation that will bring clean safe water for them to use.

This location is great because there’s always people walking or cars driving by even in the late night hours. Therefore, my target audience will focusing on people walking and cars passing by. Ages is vary.Range from 18 – 4o’s. Female/Male.

West Broadway and Prince - same idea but less people and cars passing by. This is above MaxMara store on West Broadway.

East Houston Street and West Broadway – Has a nice whitel wall. Near by a lot of bars, restaurants and clubs.

A scenario for user

Person A: Carolyn

Person B: Tim

Carolyn is walking home, a flashing video clip projection on a wall. Immediately grabbed her attention and stopped to watch. She was amazed with the visual and decided to make a donation by sending a SMS to the given number on the projection. After she texted, she continue to watch the clip for a bit and start walking home with a smile on her face.

While Carolyn was watching the video, Tim just walked out from a store/ restaurant. A flashing video and a lady standing infront of the building grabbed his curiousity to stop and watch the video. He was also amazed and said out loud, “WOW!” He pull out his phone and begin to send a sms to the given number on projection then walk away.

And during time when Carolyn and Tim was watching, there other people walking by and stop to watch for a moment then continue to walk…

The Final Concept of the Project

I was lucky to spoke with Paul Notzold. He helped me to restructure my project to complete within the remaining time i have left. I want to do a interactive video projection campagin. The video projection should be a simple visual to convey my message. My focus is to build a physcial system and the process of setting up the system from Generator to Computer to Projection and using what things to hold the system. A table? A Car? At the end of the project, the result is making the system -> Artwork -> Donation -> Experience.

These are precedents Paul Notzold suggested for me to look into it.

The High WaterLine Project was a public artwork on the New York city waterfront that created an immediate visual and local understanding of the affects of climate change. I marked the 10-feet above sea level line by drawing a blue chalk line and installing illuminated beacons in parks. The line marks the extent of increased flooding brought on by stronger and more frequent storms as a result of climate change.

Krzystof Wodiczko – a famous large scale slide and outdoor projection artist. His works are usually socially conscious, and often political in nature. One of his projection on buildings of hands or faces who speak about personal experience or crimes they suffered, allowing the public airing of issues usually kept private.

Now here is my question:

How to transform a flat wall into something to convey a message?

This campaign is like a slide show concept. It shows the water crisis facts and images. To make a contribution, donor can send a text message to the given number. After a text message is received, a thank you message will be project and also generate the “xth” number of donor that had made a contribution.

PHP, mySQL and XML Testing…

Finally, I was able to test a simple flash animation to receive data with xml, php and mysql
